Enterprising Ashwicke students win Dragon’s grant
A group of business and economics students at Ashwicke Hall School are delighted to have been awarded a grant in the Peter Jones Foundation ‘Tycoons in Schools’ competition.
The students, aged between 15 and 17 years, had to develop an idea for a new business and then submit their business plan to the Foundation for consideration. They heard on Tuesday (24th October) that they had been successful in this, first round so they are getting ready for the next stage, which will be a presentation to the Foundation next March to demonstrate their profitability.
Their business idea capitalises on very real fears about IT security and cyber criminality.
“We developed a secure system that will stop bank customers worrying about lost or locked out cards,” explained Business Director, student Anna. “By incorporating biometric data into credit and bank cards, a customer will have an alternate way to access or control their accounts.”
“Our company name comes from this idea,” said Marketing Manager, student Mahdi. “Our product will combine convenience and security so our company name does too – COSEC.”
The team is being supported by their tutor, Emmanuel Nartey. Emmanuel joined the teaching team at Ashwicke this term so has only known the students for about eight weeks but he could see they had potential.
“I thought entering this competition would really inspire this group and show them what they are capable of,” Emmanuel said. “I don’t think Ashwicke has entered any enterprise competitions like this before so we’re all really proud that they have received this grant.”
The Peter Jones Foundation, established by the well-known businessman and TV ‘Dragon’, encourages self-belief in individuals to inspire them to think differently and creatively about their future. The ‘Tycoons in Schools’ competition was launched in 2012 to give students the opportunity to run a real business in their school. The competition is free to enter and grants are awarded to successful groups to help them run their business. Winners of the competition are invited to attend an Awards Ceremony at Buckingham Palace towards the end of the academic year.
