Family Retrace History
Mr Shane Kitchens and his wife and daughter travelled from Hawaii to visit Ashwicke Hall School to see where his grandfather, Captain Robert L. Stevens, was stationed during World War II.
Captain Stevens flew a fighter plane out of Colerne RAF Base and was billeted to Ashwicke Hall for 2 months in 1942, before being posted on to North Africa.
Mr Kitchens and his family were keen to retrace his grandfather’s footsteps and are pictured sitting on the same steps at Ashwicke Hall School that his grandfather(centre) and comrades sat on back in 1942, some 75 years ago.
Mr Kitchens said after his visit, ‘My grandfather always said that Ashwicke Hall was the most beautiful place in England. I deeply want to thank you for opening up your school to my family and for taking time to give us a private tour. We especially enjoyed sitting with your School Director, Mr Nicholson, for a cup of tea while we shared some of my Grandfather’s life experiences. It was a genuine treat for us!'
